Zimbabwe has launched gold coins to be sold to the public in a bid to tame runaway inflation that has further eroded the country’s unstable currency. The unprecedented move was announced Monday by the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, to boost confidence in the local currency. Trust in Zimbabwe’s currency is low after people saw their savings wiped out by hyperinflation in 2008 which reached 5 billion%, according to the IMF. With strong memories of that disastrous inflation, many Zimbabweans today prefer to scramble on the illegal market for scarce U.S. dollars to keep at home as savings or for daily transactions. Faith in Zimbabwe’s currency is already so low that many retailers don’t accept it.

It turns out millennials haven't strayed very far from the areas where they grew up. A study released Monday by Harvard University and U.S. Census Bureau researchers found that by age 26 more than two-thirds of millennials lived in the same area where they grew up, 80% had moved less than 100 miles away and 90% resided less than 500 miles away. White and Hispanic millennials were more responsive to the prospect of moving to another place to earn more money than Black young adults. The children of higher income parents traveled farther away from their hometowns than those of less wealthy parents.

The leadership of Scottish cricket has been found to be institutionally racist by an independent review. That deals another blow to the sport after a similar scandal in the English game. The review was published after a seven-month investigation sparked by allegations from Scotland internationals Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh. It found that Scottish cricket's governing body failed in 29 out of 31 indicators of institutional racism detailed by a consultancy firm leading the investigation. The body only partially passed the other two tests and there were 448 examples of institutional racism.

COVID-19 infections are again on the rise and filling families with dread as a new school year approaches. They fear the return of the pandemic scourge of outbreaks that sideline large numbers of teachers, close school buildings and force students back into remote learning. Some school systems around the country have moved to bolster staffing to minimize disruptions. But many are hoping for the best without doing much else differently compared with last year. Even some of the districts that had the most disruptions to in-person schooling amid the spread of the highly contagious omicron variant point to few specific changes in their prevention efforts.

The alleged assassin of Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be detained until late November for mental evaluation so prosecutors can determine whether to formally press charges and sent him to trial for murder. The suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, has told police that he fatally shot Abe in July because of his links to a religious group that he hated because it bankrupted his family. Abe’s assassination has shed a light on his and his party’s decades-long questionable links to the conservative Unification Church that Japan's opposition said needs to be investigated further. The church was founded in Seoul in 1954, a year after the end of the Korean War, by a self-proclaimed messiah whose teachings are backed by conservative, family-oriented values.

Russia’s top diplomat says Moscow’s current goal is to oust the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's remark comes as the Russian military continues to pummel cities across Ukraine with artillery barrages and air strikes. It also comes as Ukraine is trying to resume exports of grain from its Black Sea ports, something that would help ease global food shortages, under a new deal tested by a Russian strike on Odesa over the weekend. Speaking to the envoys of the Arab League in Cairo late Sunday, Lavrov said that Moscow is determined to help Ukrainians “liberate themselves from the burden of this absolutely unacceptable regime.”

Ugandans protesting the rapidly rising cost of living barricaded streets in the eastern city of Jinja, a major center on the busy highway to the country’s border with Kenya. Police tried to remove molten tires from the middle of the road, according to photos published by the local Daily Monitor newspaper. The street protests come a day after authorities in the East African country warned of an alleged plot by some “within the country and abroad” to encourage people to stay indoors for three days to protest inflation that has reduced the purchasing value of the Uganda shilling.

The two candidates vying to be Britain’s next prime minister are set to face off in a TV debate as they seek to woo members of the Conservative Party who will choose the new leader. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak are battling to succeed Boris Johnson as head of Britain’s governing party. Truss and Sunak have wooed Conservatives by doubling down on policies thought to appeal to the Tory grassroots. That includes a contentious deal to send some migrants who arrive in Britain in small boats to Rwanda. The government says the policy will deter people-traffickers, but critics say it is immoral, illegal and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo is heading to Beijing for a rare visit by a foreign leader under China’s strict COVID-19 protocols. His visit comes ahead of what could be the first overseas trip by Chinese President Xi Jinping since the start of the pandemic. Widodo will meet Xi on Tuesday. Analysts say Xi may end his COVID-19 isolation to attend the Group of 20 leaders summit in person in Indonesia in mid-November. Widodo meanwhile is traveling to G-20 members Japan and South Korea to meet their leaders after his trip to China. China, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia are all members of the G-20, a group of 19 major nations and the European Union.
